New music from Lupe. First single off his much anticipated upcoming album Food & Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album. “Around My Way” uses the same Tom Scott sample made famous by Pete Rock for the CLASSIC Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth track “T.R.O.Y.” (wait…did I say CLASSIC?? OK, just making sure.). Now personally, when I first heard it, I just automatically assumed Lupe had PR’s blessings for this. Apparently not as Pete took to Twitter expressing his displeasure (via Complex). As a huge fan of PR, T.R.O.Y. as well as of Lupe, that saddens me. Here’s to hoping they work it all out for the sake of hip hop. Lupe brings a new spin to the track and provides his political/social commentary as Lupe does oh-so-well. In my opinion, “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)” doesn’t take away at all from the CLASSIC “T.R.O.Y.” (wait…did I say CLASSIC?? OK). Respect.
